The story of a whale is a paper puppet portraying whale hunting culture in Japan. Japanese has practised whaling for centuries. In ancient Japanese culture, whales have been described as demons because of their gigantic sizes. The puppet has two sides, showing contrasting point-of-views. The black whale visualises the imagery of whales as beasts according to Japanese beliefs. The white whale portrays the whale as ‘an animal’ who suffer from cultures and beliefs.
